SUNY Purchase to accommodate teen with cerebral palsy dorm request

SUNY Purchase officials plan to accommodate a 19-year-old student from Brooklyn with cerebral palsy — two days after The Post reported the college couldn’t find an extra room for his caregiver and just hours after Gov. Cuomo “urged” college officials to make space for them.

Michael Astor said the college is hammering out a deal that would provide separate rooms for his son, Nick, and his caregiver on the same floor as close to each other as possible.

The elder Astor said said he’s awaiting an official proposal from the school.

“We have to see, but I don’t want to stand down just yet. This took a tremendous effort. We had to mobilize an army,” he said of the negotiations.

The Post reported on Astor’s plight on Tuesday and Cuomo issued a statement Wednesday night saying, “I applaud Nick Astor for his achievements and resolve, and I have urged SUNY Purchase to accommodate him.”

Michael Astor said he’d be thrilled that his son’s situation is being resolved but warned he won’t be satisfied until SUNY revises its policies covering the disabled.

“If we can’t use this to help other people in this situation then this will be a bit of a hollow victory,” he said.

SUNY Purchase had no immediate comment.
